The photos above, taken on 3/28/2025, show how dense some of the buckthorn is along the Root River State Trail.
After
The photo on the left side was taken in June 2023 and shows buckthorn branches reaching into the trail. By the time this area was cleared in September the branches had grown and drooped enough that bikers needed to swerve to avoid them. Buckthorn is notorious for its ability to grow sideways while creating a dense thicket.
